I probably searched through thousands of pages of floor plans from every website in existence, and although there were some that I really loved – none were 100% what we wanted or needed. We knew that with young kids, a one story was best for us. We knew that with the layout of our land, a ranch style home would look best. We knew we wanted the master bedroom on the opposite side of the house as the kids’ bedrooms. We knew we wanted a flex-room that could be used as an office or a spare bedroom. We knew we were looking for a needle in a haystack. Finally, I started to take pieces of each house I like and draw them out on graph paper. Little by little, each piece came together to form our not-so-perfectly drawn out home.

Definitely NOT the prettiest, but it got the job done! I sent it over to my friends, Dale and Theresa, at Cornerstone Home Design and they worked their magic! I HIGHLY recommend them for custom floor plans. They were extremely affordable, SUPER easy to work with, and they made the entire process so simple from beginning to end. If you reach out to them for your plans, make sure to tell them I sent you! 🙂
We made some changes in the design phases, which you might be able to tell if you’ve been following along. We extended the back porch and moved the carport (also extended it to a 3-car per my husband’s wishes).
I love the fact that no one else in the world has our exact house. Every single bit of our home is custom to fit our specific needs. My best advice is to not overwhelm yourself by believing you have to choose a floor plan from the internet. Make a list of needs and a list of wants, research lots of floor plans, and find bits and pieces from each one that will suit your family best. Remember: custom floor plans do not have to be expensive!! All in all, we had a total of $600 if our floor plans. It’s easy, y’all! If I can do it, you can too.
